To perform this facebook trick you have to do the following steps:

1.      Go to the following URL: http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php

2.       Check the “Load This Bookmark In Sidebar” box.

3..       Then, you should go to View->Sidebar->Bookmarks to open the sidebar bookmarks as shown in screenshot below.

4.Choose the page you bookmarked before and there you have it, the Facebook Chat is always in your sidebar, no matter what page you are currently browsing.
